Propagation of Radio Waves.

Sky Waves.

After leaving the transmitting antenna, the Sky Wave travels through space to

the ionised regions in the outer portions of the earths atmosphere, where, if

conditions are favourable, the wave will be refracted, or bent, earthwards.

In this way, it is possible for waves to travel around the curvature of the

earth and reach points much too distant for Ground Wave reception.

Nature of the Ionosphere.

The term 'Ionosphere' refers to the ionised regions that exist in the outer

portion of the earths atmosphere. The ionosphere results from ionisation,

that is, breaking up of the Gas Molecules of the outer atmosphere by Solar

Radiation, and consists of a mixture of Free Electrons, and Positive and

Negative Ions in a rarified gas.

The extent to which radio waves are affected by the ionised regions is

determined by the variation in the density of the free electrons with

height. This variation is normally characterised by several distant maxima

or 'Layers'. The degree of ionisation in these layers is dependent on the

Sun's Zenith Angle and therefore it might be expected to exist only

during the daylight hours. However, because the process of recombination

takes place at a limited rate, some ionisation persists throughout the

night hours.

In the daytime, there are normally three distant layers of progressively

increasing Electron Density. These layers being referred to as the E, F,

and F2 layers respectively. In addition, there is a weak fourth layer known

as the D layer. However, as the D layer has such small effect on the

propagation of radio waves, only incidental reference will be made to it in

this article. The layers exists at heights above the earth varying from

about 50 Kilometres in the case of the D layer, to between about 270 to

370 Kilometers in the case of the F2 layer.

More of the nature of the ionosphere next week. I would like to add

sketch's showing the ionised layers and their heights, but it is beyond

the capability of the RTTY mode.

Please remember that ANARTS now has its own web site, the URL is

http://www.anarts.com.au, once more my thanks to Bruce VK2RT for providing

the web space. If you have any articles relating to RTTY or similar modes that

you would like to see on our web pages, please contact me at the address

shown at the end of this broadcast.

IPS Weekly Solar and Geophysical Report 21/27th Apr

Solar flare activity was very low 21st and 23rd; low on 22nd 24th and 25th

moderate with one M1 flare on 26th and high with one M7 flare on 27th.

Geomagnetic activity observed for the Australian Region was quiet to

unsettled on 21/ 23rd and quiet thereafter. There were minor storm periods

at high latitudes on 22nd.

Southern Australian Ionospheric F2 critical frequencies were near

predicted to 15 percent enhanced on 21st 23rd and 24th near predicted to

20 percent enhanced on 22nd and 25th enhanced 10 percent on 26th and

enhanced 15 percent on 27th.

Forecast for 28th Apr to 4th May

Solar activity should be moderate during the week due to the transit of

active region 875 in particular, and possibly also AR876 and 877. AR875

has already produced M class flares and retains the potential to do so.

Frequencies should be generally above predicted monthly values by 10 to 25

percent due to extra ionising solar radiation from active regions

875/876/877. Conditions may be depressed and frequencies reduced by

ionospheric storms resulting solar Coronal Mass Ejections from AR875

striking the geomagnetic field.

Geomagnetic activity should be generally quiet to unsettled conditions.

YX0, AVES ISLAND On The Air But With Sad News.

The Aves Island DXpedition came on the air Apr 20 and is expected to be

active until about May 1. However, the DXpedition group had an incident on

the island. Jose Manuel Valdes Rodriguez YV5LIX, one of the operators,

suffered a heart attack, and the two physicians with the DXpedition team were

unable to resuscitate him. Jose's death at around 0400z, occurred shortly after

the YX0A DXpedition got under way. The Aves Island DXpedition reportedly has

obtained permission to use the memorial callsign YX0LIX until the DXpedition

ends.
