Propagation of Radio Waves.

Sky Waves and the Nature of the Ionosphere.

During the night hours, when the process of recombination is taking

place, the D layer disappears, the electron density of the E layer

is greatly reduced and the F1 and F2 layers combine to form the F

layer which occupies approximately the same position in space as does

the F1 layer in daylight hours.

Not only does the maximum electron density in the layers vary with

the time of day (Diurnal Variation), but also with seasonal changes.

As the position of the Sun relative to the Earth moves with the changes

in season from one hemisphere to another, the maximum electron density

shifts correspondingly.

In the E and F1 layers, the maximum electron density follows regular

diurnal and seasonal changes, being greatest at noon and tapering off

at earlier and later hours, and also being somewhat greater in summer

than in winter.

The maximum electron density in the F2 layers shows a much larger

diurnal and seasonal cycle, and also shows a much larger random

fluctuation from day to day.

In addition to diurnal and seasonal changes, there are several other

solar and ionospheric phenomena which influence the electron density

and heights of the ionised layers.

These phenomena will be the subject of next weeks part of this article.

As we get deeper into this subject I will scan some sketches relating to

this subject and place them on Anarts Web Site http://www.anarts.com.au
