Col's Column

------------

Propagation of Radio Waves.

The effect of the Ionosphere on the Sky Wave.

The propagation of radio waves through the ionosphere is similar in

many respects to the water-air analogy that was the subject of last

weeks column.

Each ionised layer, because of the variation in electron density through

the layer, presents a constantly changing medium for the passage of a

radio wave which enters the layer. The velocity of the wave in the ionised

layer increases as the electron density increases, and therefore increases

with the depth of penetration of the wave into the layer.

The conditions required to return a sky wave to earth can be expressed in

terms of the refractive index of the ionised layer. Although somewhat

affected by the earths magnetic field and collisions between vibrating

electrons and gas molecules, the refractive index is determined primarily

by the electron density and the frequency of the radio wave.

Unfortunately, the equation determining the refractive index cannot be

expressed in RTTY mode. However, the principle has been stated in the

previous paragraph, and is basically the same as the water-air equation.

As pointed out last week, the smaller the refractive index, the greater

is the degree of bending, and hence, as the wave train enters the ionised

layer, the upper portions of the wave fronts are bent or refracted to a

greater extent than the lower portions. since the upper portions are in an

area of lower refractive index (with a greater velocity).

This part of the article will continue next week

Solar flare activity was very low all week.

Geomagnetic activity observed for the Australian Region was quiet to

unsettled on 12/14th and 18th and quiet on 15/17th.

Southern Australian Ionospheric F2 critical frequencies were near

predicted all week except for the 17th when frequencies were near

predicted to 15 per cent enhanced.

Forecast for 19/25th May

Solar activity is expected to range from very low to low. There are

currently no active regions on disk, but it is possible returning

region 875, which is due to appear in the next few days, may bring

with it an increase in solar activity as it was the source of M-class events on its last transit.

Geomagnetic sees quiet to unsettled conditions expected, with isolated

active periods early in this forecast week - as solar wind parameters

remain elevated due to a geoeffective coronal hole.

Frequencies should be near predicted monthly values, with some depressed

periods and disturbed ionospheric conditions possible for mid-high

latitudes early in the week. No Short Wave Fadeouts are expected.

RUSSIA NEWS

It has been reported that some changes have taken place for Russian amateurs

(as of 'a couple of weeks ago). Russian amateurs can now run a KW and also

operate up to 7.200 MHz with the government there providing these new

operating factors. This news is only true for the former Soviet state we now

call Russia and not necessarily the other former Soviet states.

VI9, NORFOLK ISLAND (Pitcairner landing celebrations by Jim Smith VK9NS)

'Although I have lived on Norfolk for almost 26 years and Kirsti many more

years neither of us are Norfolk Islanders. Jun of this year marks the 150th

Anniversary of the landing of the people of Pitcairn Island, the descendants

of the Bounty Mutineers on Norfolk Island. The discovery of Pitcairn Island

with its 'lost' population is a whole saga in itself. The subsequent movement

of this population was sanctioned by Queen Victoria. The British government

then arranged their transport to and settlement on the vacant possession of

Norfolk Island. (Some Pitcairners subsequently wished to return 'home' to

Pitcairn. This was allowed and carried out on a one off and final basis.

Hence the current Christian and Young, etc, families resident on Pitcairn

Island.) The celebration of this unique migration is special to the Norfolk

Islanders (those of Pitcairn descent) and there are many things being

planned. It will be a very interesting period.

To help celebrate the event the HIDXA Club has been issued with the special

callsigns of VI9NL and VI9NS for the whole month of June covering the period

of the celebrations. Kirsti VK9NL and I VK9NS will use these special calls

and will both try to be as active as possible during the period. For the

record, the HIDXA Club was created some 23 years ago after the return from

Heard Island, and is registered on Norfolk Island....'

73 Jim, VK9NS

VI9, NORFOLK ISLAND

Bill VK4FW informs OPDX that all equipment has now been sent to Norfolk Island

in readiness for their arrival of the team on May 24. The team consists of

Ron/VE7NS Gary/ZL2IFB Phil/VK2BAA Eddie/ VK4AN Merve/VK4DV John/VK5PO and

Bill/VK4FW. Bill states, 'We have been very fortunate to have the use of our

special callsign VI9NI. This has been issued to help celebrate the 150th

anniversary of the landing of the 'HMS Bounty Mutineers.' Suggested operating

frequencies are
