Propagation of Radio Waves.

Critical Frequency

The maximum electron density of an ionospheric layer is commonly expressed

in terms of the 'Critical Frequency'. This is the highest frequency that

the layer can return to earth when the wave enters with vertical incidence.

The critical frequency corresponds to a refractive index of zero at the

point of maximum electron density.

When the frequency of the Sky Wave is less than the critical value, the

layer returns the wave to earth for all angles of incidence, including

the vertical.

Each layer of the ionosphere has its own critical frequency th at

corresponds to its maximum electron density, and since the electron

density of the layers goes through diurnal and seasonal changes, the

critical frequency does likewise.

Since the daytime F2 and night-time F layers have the greatest density,

these layers have the highest critical frequency and therefore

determine whether or not a sky wave of any particular frequency will

be refracted back to earth when the wave strikes the ionosphere with

vertical incidence.

Attenuation of Radio Waves by the ionosphere.

A radio wave entering the ionosphere exerts a force on the free electrons

which sets them in motion. Thus the energy contained in the radio wave is

in part transferred into kinetic energy (energy of motion) of the electrons.

If the free electrons do not collide with gas molecules and other ions,

all of this energy is reconverted into electromagnetic energy, and the

wave continues to be propagated with undiminished intensity. However,

if the moving electrons collide with other particles, part of their

energy is lost and an attenuation of the intensity of the wave results.

More on this attenuation next week

Please remember that ANARTS WW RTTY Contest takes place next week,

I hope you are able to take part in the contest, at least give a few

QSOs and fly the Aussie Flag. There are many, many DX stations

waiting to work you.

DID YOU KNOW

------------

Did you know that ANARTS uses the CABRILLO format for processing logs

received from Contesters????

Once in Cabrillo format, a log can be fully processed for such items as

Total score, Points scored for each QSO, Checks each QSO for Country

and other Multiple scoring, Checks for duplicate QSO's, and also Checks

for the time Contesters spent working the Contest. This is only a

small part of what the Cabrillo Log Checking program does, there are

many other things in a log that it checks.

If you wish to take part in this years ANARTS WW RTTY CONTEST, please

check out the ANARTS Cabrillo Log Format at http://www.anarts.com.au

You can also download Cabrillo Log converters, do a search on google.
