------------
ANARTS WW RTTY Contest was held during last weekend. The propagation
was not the best, at least in my part of the World, and several
Contesters have mentioned that we are at the bottom of the Sun Spot
Cycle. Well it can only get better from here on.
This is being written on Friday afternoon, 16th June, I have received
250 logs so far, by the time you read this you can probably add
another 50, looks like another big year, perhaps we might even get
over 500 logs for the first time. If you have a log you wish to
submit the address is ctdavies at bigpond.net.au.
Some of the logs received have pretty big scores, so someone had good
conditions, and good luck to them.
Propagation of Radio Waves.
Skip Phenomena and Skip Distance.
As we all know, it is possible for radio waves to be returned to earth
quite a distance from the transmission point and for them to 'Skip'
over the area in the immediate vicinity of the Transmitter. The distance
from the transmitter to the point where the sky wave returns to earth
is called the 'Skip Distance'. The skip distance varies greatly with
change of frequency, time of day and angle of incidence.
When the skip distance is appreciable, the ground wave will die out
completely in much less distance than the skip distance and the skip
region will then contain a 'Zone of Silence' where no signals are
received, even though strong signals are received at greater distances.
As already point out, the skip distance for radio waves propagated
at a constant angle of incidence increases as the frequency increases.
This fact is of particular importance in cases where the Radio Receiver
is moving away from the transmitter, for example, ground to air
communications with aircraft, or ships at sea, even mobile amateur radio
stations at times. In operations of this sort, the general rule is that
as the aircraft, vessel, or other type of station moves further away
from the transmitting station, the operating frequency must be increased
to maintain radio contact between the two stations.
Maximum Usable Frequency
For High Frequency (HF) radio transmission over any fixed Great Circle
distance under the prevailing propagation conditions, there is an upper
limit to the frequency which can be used. This maximum frequency is
known as the 'Maximum Usable Frequency' (MUF).
We will go deeper into MUF's in next weeks part.
73's for this week, Colin VK2CTD.
