Anarts Information Col's Column ------------ Contest update: We have about 310 logs received already by E-mail. All logs have been saved to hard disc and a CD. I have completely processed just on 100 logs and they have been sorted into order of highest score so far. I have had some problem logs this year, logs completely out of the required format. I have tried with some success to correct these logs, but one or two are too long to spend precious time on. I have sent the contesters concerned an E-mail pointing the way, but It may be that we shall have to discard these logs unless the contesters concerned fix them up. Will keep you informed from time to time. Propagation of Radio Waves. Maximum Usable Frequency continued. When communications are carried out over a fixed distance, it is possible for the radio waves to travel via any one of the ionised layers which may be present at that time, the actual path taken being dependent on frequency layer conditions, angle of incidence, etc.. For each layer, assuming a constant angle of incidence of the wave to that layer, there is a maximum frequency which can be used for transmission via the layers from one fixed point to another. Frequencies above this maximum will skip over the receiving point. The maximum frequency for each layer is related to the critical frequency of the layer and to the angle of incidence with which the wave enters the layer by the following formula: Maximum Usable Frequency for any layer equals 'Critical Frequency of the layer' over the 'Cosine of the Angle of Incidence. To determine the MUF between two points, it is necessary to calculate the maximum frequency which each layer will return to earth at the required distance from the transmitter, and then select the maximum frequency obtained by these calculations as the MUF. An example of calculating a MUF will be placed on ANARTS web site this week, look under ANARTS Broadcasts. More on MUF's next week. 73's Col VK2CTD. The very first amateur radio activity from this new DXCC entity will be managed by an International DXpedition Team and is planned to take part very quickly after approval of the DXCC status.' Crucial for DXCC credit is either acceptance of Montenegro by the UN into its membership or allocation of a callsign prefix block by the ITU. They expected this to take place during the summer of 2006. The expedition will be held from three different locations using only one callsign (for the very first time) from the newly acquired ITU prefix allocation to Montenegro. Also mentioned activity will be on all bands and modes simultaneously during 2-3 weeks of continual activity from several setups located at the Adriatic Coast of Mediterranean Montenegro.
