Propagation of Radio Waves.
Maximum Usable Frequency continued.
Since layer conditions undergo diurnal and seasonal variations, the MUF
will not be a constant quantity, but will be subject to diurnal and
seasonal variations also. A graph showing typical variations in MUF for
distances up to 2000 miles over a 24 hour day. plus accompanying text,
will be placed on ANARTS Web site this Sunday.
Regarding the time factor, the important layer conditions are those at
the point of refraction. Since the local time changes with Longitude,
it is necessary to know the local time at the point of refraction, so
that the layer conditions governing the MUF can be determined. For
example, between Sydney and Perth, a distance of approximately 3000
Kilometres, there is a two hour local time difference. When it is 12 noon
in Sydney, it is 1000 hours in Perth. (Disregarding Daylight Saving).
For sky wave communications between Sydney and Perth, the important
ionospheric conditions are not those at either Sydney or Perth, but
those at the point of refraction by the ionospheric layers, that is
midway between the two cities and therefore at a point where the local
time is 1100 hours. The MUF under these conditions would be about 22Mhz,
as shown on the graph on ANARTS Web Site.
More of this fascinating subject next week.
