Propagation of Radio Waves.

Day And Night Frequencies

The main factor influencing the need for reduction in operating frequency

at night is the reduction of the electron density of the ionospheric

layers, and hence the critical frequencies of these layers, which occurs

during the night hours. The extent of the reduction in electron density

and the approximate daily variations in critcal frequency will be shown in

sketch's placed on ANARTS Web Site this weekend. Another factor affecting

the propagation of radio waves under day and night conditions is the

variations in height of the actual refracting layers.

These factors result in reduction of MUF's for communications between

any two fixed points and increases to the skip distance obtained with

particular frequencies during night hours.

The daytime MUF's for distances up to approximately 3000 kilometres are

shown in a seperate sketch this weekend, the minimum frequency being

about 6 mhz and the maximum 20 mhz. However, betweeen 500 and 2500 kilometres,

the MUF may be obtained from the E layer, allowing higher frequencies than

would normally be expected to be used over these distances.

I will complete the day and night frequencies next week...

Contest News...

I have received approximately 350 logs now, only one of which has been received

via the post. The vast majority of the logs have been converted to the ANARTS

format and around 330 have been processed ok through the log checking program.

So am a little ahead of this time last year. I hope to have it all completed

before bidding farewell to these shores for colder climes....

73's for now Colin VK2CTD.
