Propagation of Radio Waves.

Day And Night Frequencies continued.

With the merging of the F1 and F2 layers in the F layers into the F layer,
and the reduced electron density in both the E and F layers during the
night hours, the MUF's for the distances indicated in last weeks broadcast,
are considerably reduced, the extent of this reduction is shown in a
sketch on ANARTS Web Site this weekend. See broadcast 1406 under
ANARTS Broadcasts.

The increases in skip distances for particular frequencies which occur
during night time are also important, particularly for mobile communications,
for example ship to shore and Aircraft to Ground and Amateur Radio Mobile.

Variation of skip distance for approximate day and night conditions is also
shown in a drawing on www.anarts.com on Sunday. This shows where two 
frequencies with a constant angle of incidence to the ionospheric conditions
are compared. The diagram shows that during day time, the lower frequencies
have only a short skip distance, while the higher frequencies, being
refracted by the higher layers, have a greater skip distance.

At night however, refraction of the lower frequencies generally takes place
at the F layer, which being higher than the E layer, give much greater
skip distances for the lower frequencies. 

The higher frequencies normally pass through the F layer when the angle
of incidence is fairly small. However, as the angle of incidence increases,
the layer returns progressively higher frequencies.

night skip distances for a ranges of frequencies will also be available
on our web site this Sunday. Hope you can take advantage of these

Solar flare activity was low on 24th and very low over the rest of
the period.

Geomagnetic activity observed for the Australian Region was quiet to
unsettled on 24th and quiet otherwise.

Southern Australian Ionospheric F2 critical frequencies were near
predicted to 30 percent enhanced on 21st and 24th near predicted to
20 percent enhanced on 22/23rd and 26th near predicted to greater
than 30 percent enhanced on 25th near predicted to 20 percent enhanced
on 26th and near predicted to 10 percent enhanced on 27th.

Forecast for 28th Jul to 3rd Aug

Solar activity should be low.

Geomagnetic activity should see active conditions 31st Jul to 1st Aug
and quiet to unsettled on other days.

Frequencies should be briefly depressed after local dawn 31st to 1st
and near predicted monthly values on other days.

Notes of interest

NEW COUNTRY DXCC. Swains Island has been added to the DXCC List. Entity
number 337 qualifies as the first separation entity from American Samoa,
now a Political Entity. The distance between American Samoa and Swains
Island has been determined to be in excess of 350km as required by DXCC
Rules Section II Paragraph 2 Section b. QSOs made with Swains Island
on or after 0001Z Jul 22 06 will count for DXCC credit.

SWAINS ISLAND, KH8S. The first operation from this new DXCC Entity will
be conducted by Kan JA1BK Uti KS6FO Paul F6EXV John K1ER Tets AH7C and
John K8YSE under the callsign KH8SI. They plan is to leave Pago-Pago on
25 or 27 Jul and to be on the air SSB and CW on 17-160M for 3-4 days.
QSL via JA1BK.

MAYOTTE, FH. Between 31 Aug/11 Sep Tom DL2RUM will be active as TX5T.
Will be also on Jan DJ8NK as TX5NK from 6-160m on CW SSB and PSK.
Qsl via HC.

MARKET REEF, OJ0. Sep 8/14th a large team of LA guys will be operating
OJ0LA from 160 to 10m on SSB CW and RTTY.

BERMUDA, VP9. Look for VP9/K3TRM active from Aug 3/8th on SSB RTTY and
CW from 160 to 6m. Qsl via Buro or direct.

CHIOS ISLAND, SV8, IOTA EU-049, MIA MG-025 EXPEDITION 

George SV8GXC and Marcel PA9M will be QRV from KM38BJ in Chios Island
Greece. Marcel will be active as SV8/PA9M/P from 29/7 to 10/8 in various
bands and modes QSL via PA9M. George will be active as SV8GXC from 25/7
to 10/8 in 160m/80m/40m/20m/15m/10m/6m bands on PSK31 RTTY CW and SSB.
The majority of SV8GXC activity will take place in 20m/40m/80m in digital
modes PSK31 and RTTY. Georges activity (freq and mode) will be published

SAMOA, 5W. Operators KT8X, K8AQM, N8CC and JF3MYU are QRV as 5W0DW,
5W0TR, 5W0JB and 5W0KI, respectively, until Aug 10. They may be active
as 5W0XX in the IOTA contest. Activity is on 160 to 10M using CW SSB
and RTTY. QSL 5W0KI and 5W0XX via JF3MYU and all others via KT8X.

PHILIPPINES, DU. Peter DK2PR is QRV holiday style as DU9/DK2PR from
Mindanao Island IOTA OC-130 Til Aug 15. He may also try a side trip to
islands in the IOTA OC-235 group.

SPAIN, EA. A group of operators are QRV as ED7SPI from Sancti-Petri's
Island IOTA EU-143 til Jul 30. They may also participate in the IOTA
contest. They may also try to activate other locations within the IOTA
group as well. QSL via bureau.

ST. PIERRE AND MIQUELON, FP. Paul K9OT and Peg KB9LIE are QRV as FP/
homecalls til Aug 6 from Miquelon Island IOTA NA-032. Activity is on 80
to 6M using CW and SSB. This includes an entry in the IOTA contest and
the upcoming NA CW QSO Party. QSL to home calls.

ENGLAND, G. Operators G4BUO G4TSH G0FDZ G0VJG G7GLW and M3CVN are QRV
til Aug 2 from St.Mary Island IOTA EU-011 as G3RCV/p or homecalls/p
between Jul 26 and Aug 2. During the IOTA contest they will be active as
M8C.  QSL both calls via G4DFI.

SCOTLAND, GM. Steve MM1ERS and Colin GM3VCQ are QRV from Arran Island
IOTA EU-123 til Aug 1. TheY will be active as MM3M in the IOTA contest.

WALES, GW. Several members of the North Wakefield ARC are QRV as GB4CI

Island IOTA AS-107 during IOTA Contest. They are active as E21YDP/p on
