Propagation of Radio Waves.
Propagation of VHF Frequency Radio Waves.
Effect of Earths Curvature and Atmosphere.
For VHF transmissions over considerable distances, it is necessary to take
into account the curvature of the Earth. Even though this may mean that a
straight line path does not exist between transmitter and receiving antennae,
it is possible for energy to reach the receiver as a result of refractions
by the earths atmosphere, providing, of course, that the degree of bending
necessary for the wave to reach the receiving point is relatively small.
Refraction by the Earths atmosphere comes about because the variation of
pressure, temperature and moisture content of the atmosphere with height
causes the refractive index of the atmosphere to decrease. This tends to bend
the wave back towards the Earth in much the same manner as the ionospheric
layers cause bending of HF waves.
The amount of bending that results from atmospheric refraction varies with
atmospheric conditions, but on the average, it is equivalent to assuming the
earths radius is increased by 25 to 35 percent.
VHF transmission paths are extremely stable as long as a straight line path
is possible between transmitting and receiving points. However, when the
transmission distance is such that it is necessary to depend on the refraction
in the Earths atmosphere to obtain direct ray transmission to the receiver,
fading frequently occurs as a result of variations in the Earths atmosphere
changing the amount of refraction that the wave undergoes. This fading becomes
more severe as the transmission distances approaches the maximum possible
distance of direct ray transmission,
A diagram, showing the propagation of VHF energy between transmitter and receiver
under conditions where a straight line path falls slightly below the Earths
surface, will be placed on ANARTS web page, with explanatory text, this weekend.
Next week we take a look at miscellaneous factors affecting the propagation of
radio waves, commencing with noise.
