Propagation of Radio Waves.
Factors affecting Propagation of Radio Waves.
Radio Noise.
Radio noise is generated by two sources. Nature and Man.
The most common sources of natural Radio noise are local thunderstorms,
precipitation static and atmospheric noise. The last source mentioned,
atmospheric noise, is primarily due to the combined effect of all the
thunderstorms occurring at any given moment throughout the World.
Atmospheric noise is by far the most troublesome of the natural noise.
At low frequencies where ground wave transmissions previal during the
daytime, local thunderstorms and precipitation are the primary cause of
natural noise. At night when the sky wave predominates, atmospheric
noise is added and may be so great as to constitue an almost constant
source of interference.
Atmospheric noise is also the most important source of noise in the
2-30 Mhz range and in general exhibits the following characteristics.
The noise levels are greater at low latitudes than at higher latitudes.
They are higher in the vicinity of land masses than over the ocean.
cqcq de vk2tty vk2tty
They are higher during the night than during the day, with a tendency
to increase with an increase of frequency during the day and decrease
with a decrease of frequency during the night, and in temperate zones,
they are higher in summer than in winter.
The effects of natural noise on frequencies in the VHF band is rela
-tively small, since at these frequencies, the waves are propagated
only moderate distances, resulting in a low level of atmospherice noise.
Such noise as is present is usally due to local thunderstorms and
precipitation static, and in some areas, and on some occassions can be
fairly severe.
Man made radio noise disturbs reception throughout the radio frequency
spectrum. It is caused at relatively short distances by non radio
equipment operating at radio frequency, such as Xray machines, etc,
and by any type of electrical equipment in which sparks occur.
Sources of man made noise are particularly numerous in industrial
areas, cities and towns, resulting in higher noise levels in these
areas than in rural areas.
When the receiving point is close to the sosurce of the noise, man made
noise is troublesome on all frequencies. However, at considerable
distance from the source of the disturbance, it is in general of little
importance below about 10 Mhz because of the larger effect of natural
noise. Above 10 Mhz, the short distance effect of ignition systems and
other sources of spark radiation have to be taken into account. As the
frequeny is increased, these effects again become negilible, although
at 100 Mhz or so, noise of this nature can still be troublesome.
Next week we look at Ionospheric Irregularities, starting with Ionospheric
Storms.
