Propagation of Radio Waves.

Introduction, continued.

The intensity of a radio wave is measured in terms of the voltage

stress produced by the electrostatic field of the wave, which is

normally expressed in microvolts per metre (uV/M).

This strength in microvolts, is also exactly the same voltage as

the electromagnetic flux of the wave induced in a conductor. For

example, an antenna, one metre long when sweeping across the

conductor with the velocity of light.

The minimum field strength required to give a satisfactory reception

of a radio wave varies with the amount of interference present. Under

favourable conditions, field strengths of less than 1 uV/M will

produce intelligible signals.

Much greater field strengths are generally necessary however, because

of interference waves generated by man-made and natural sources.

In rural areas, experience has shown that it normally requires a much

lower field strength to ensure good reception at all times than is

required in urban areas where man-made interference is much greater.

This is one of the arguments for remotely locating the receivers of

commercial or communication organisations.

Ground and Sky waves.

The energy radiated from a transmitting antenna located near the

earths surface can be conveniently divided into Ground and Sky waves.

The Ground wave represents the energy travelling along the surface

of the earth, and its behaviour depends on the frequency and

character of the surface involved.

The Sky wave on the other hand represents the energy radiated at an

angle above the horizontal, and its ultimate behaviour is determined

by the ionised regions in the upper atmosphere.

Next week we shall look more closely at the Ground wave and in the

weeks ahead, the much bigger subject of Sky waves.

For information, in RTTY mode, I cannot express Microvolts per Metre

correctly, the u is actually the greek character Mu, and uV/m is the

closest RTTY will allow.

6W & J5, SENEGAL AND GUINEA-BISSAU

Peter, HA3AUI, has announced that he has prolonged his stay in Africa and will

now be active from both from Senegal (as 6W/HA3AUI) and Guinea-Bissau (as J5UAP)

until June 10th. Look for activity on 20/17/15/12/10 meters, SSB, with some

possible PSK and RTTY. He was heard this past week from J5-land on 20 meters

RTTY. QSL via his home callsign direct only.

8Q, MALDIVES (Correction/Update)

Simon, M0BOX, is now active as 8Q7BO from the Kuredu Island Resort (AS-013 --

not AS-018 as mentioned last week..), now through April 20th. He was heard on

PSK Sunday on 15 meters around 1023z. Look for activity during his spare time on

all bands 40-10 meters, the WARC bands included. Simon will concentrate on the

digital modes, mainly PSK31 plus RTTY and maybe SSTV if requested, and of course

SSB. Further information and updates can be found at:

C9, MOZAMBIQUE (Update/Still Looking For Ops!)

Frosty, K5LBU/C91CF, announced that they now have one CW and one SSB operator

signed on for the Dxpedition to Mozambique this June-July. They will be there

and on the air from June 29th to July 13th. He states that they would like to

have at least 2 more operators join them. They plan to be in the IARU Contest.

They will also operate on EME on 6-2m and 70cm and plan to do PSK and RTTY in

their spare time. They hope to have 2 statons set up but need 2 more CW and one

more SSB operator to make it worth their effort to do both. Check out the Web

site to see the location they will be staying at:

http://www.tdxs.net/C9.html

Frosty will be in Visalia for the International DX Convention if you would like

to talk to him. Or you can call him at home at 281-437-1978 after 5 PM DST.

HA, HUNGARY (Special Activity)

Since March 29th (2006), the Hungarian amateurs can use 50-52 MHz. To celebrate

the long-awaited legalization of that band, the special callsign HA50MHZ will be

aired by Chris, HA5X, through December 31, 2006. Look for this special callsign

on CW/SSB and the digital modes. A short-term award is also in preparation, so

work as many HA/HG stations on 6m as you can. QSLs for HA50MHZ are via HA5X, the

LoTW or eQSL.

HH, HAITI

Operator Glauber, PS7EB, will be active as HH/PS7EB between May 19th and

November 25th. Glauber works for the Brazilian Army and has joined a group of

Brazilian Military Forces that will work together with ONU on a peace program in

Haiti. He will use an IC-746 PRO and a vertical multi-bander antenna and hopes

to be active on both modes CW/SSB and also the digital modes. QSL via PS7EB,

direct (QRZ.com) or by the Bureau. For direct QSLs, please enclose SASE + 1 USD

(or 1 IRC).

IOTA NEWS

Rag, LA6FJA, will operate as DU1/KI4KJP from Luzon Island (WLOTA LH-0081),

between now and May 1st. Activity will be on 80/40/30/20/17 meters CW, SSB, RTTY

and PSK31. QSL via WY4N (QRZ.com).

SA-NEW. CANCELLED! Zoli/HA1AG and Marco/CE6TBN were expected to activate a new IOTA this past weekend, but operations were cancelled due to WX and sea

conditions. The island was to be Pupuya Island in the O'Higgins/Maule Island

Group of Chile (group E under Chile in the IOTA Directory). The callsign was to

be XR4PI. Detailed information about the island can be found at:

SPECIAL EVENT

Members of Sala Consilina ARI team will operate from April 15th to May 15th with

the special callsign IO8VAT to celebrate the 75 years of the foundation of

Vatican Radio. Receive a special QSL card via the bureau from IZ8AJQ or direct

from: ARI, P.O. Box 11, CAP 84036 Sala Consilina (SA), ITALY.

YK, SYRIA

Saad, N5FF, informs OPDX that he has postponed his business trip to the Jordan

(JY) and has decided to proceed with his YK trip earlier than planned. He will

arrive in Damascus on the evening of April 16th, and should be active again as

YK1BA from April 17 through May 5th, returning home to Texas on May 6th. As

usual, the purpose of the trip is not a DXpedition, so his operating will be

sporadic. However, Saad hopes to be able to operate at least 3-4 hours a day.

Saad states, "With the current band conditions, I don't have a solid plan as to

what bands I will be operating on. However, I will operate on whatever bands

(80-10m) and modes that have the best propagation at the time." He suggests that

the most probable operating times are between 0100-0400z, 1900-2200z and

possibly 1100-1400z. Modes of operations will be on SSB and CW, but he will do

his best to work as much RTTY as possible also. QSL via N5FF.

YX0, AVES ISLAND (Update)

Members of the Association of Radioamateurs of Venezuela (ARV) and the Grupo DX

Caracas (GDXC) will activate Aves Island (Isla de Aves), on April 19th for two

weeks (if everything goes as planned, no promises here because they depend on

the Venezuelan NAVY for transport- ation and the landing permit). See details in

OPDX.753. Jose (Joe), YV5LIX, announced this past week that he will be the

DXpedition's digital modes coordinator for the YX0A operation. Modes will be

RTTY, PSK31 and PSK63.
