Time of transmission is 1930 local time on Tuesdays and the frequency is 146.775MHZ. ANARTS now has a web site at www.anarts.com.au where information about the society can be found, as well as the weekly broadcast texts. VK2SG RTTY DX report 4. ARRL DX BULLETIN 5 425 DX BULLETIN 6. Anarts Information Col's Column ------------ Propagation of Radio Waves. Propagation of VHF Frequency Radio Waves. The 30 to 300Mhz VHF Band is well suited for short distance communications of all kinds, and is extensively used by fixed, mobile, broadcasting and navigation services, including our own Amateur Radio Service. This band is different from the lower frequency bands in that is cannot be relied upon for transmission over great distances, but rather has a 'Line of Sight' characteristic. However, there are numerous occasions, particularly at the lower end of the band. where long distance trans -missions have been used, but more often, these transmissions constitute a potential source of interference to other services using the same frequency at a distance normally out of range of the transmission. In the case of Amateur Radio, this can be used to our advantage. Cases of transmission to great distances decrease rapidly with an increase of frequency and become negligible above about 80Mhz. The primary propagation characteristic of this band is that, except for some conditions of the ionosphere, frequencies within the band are not refracted by the ionospheric layers, but pass through the layers, even when the angle of incidence approaches the greatest value than can be obtained because of the shape of the Earth. At the same time, the ground wave of these frequencies is very rapidly attenuated. It must be pointed out, that there is no hard and fast boundary between frequencies which will be refracted and those which will not by the ionospheric layers. In actual fact, frequencies as great as about 25Mhz in the daytime, and about 10-20Mhz at night, depending on the angle of incidence, will pass through the layers and will not be returned to Earth. The use of frequencies in the VHF band requires the waves to pass through the space above the earth from an elevated transmitting antenna to an elevated receiving antenna. When the distance between the transmitter and the receiver is small enough for the Earth to be regarded as 'Flat', the waves may reach the receiver either by the direct path or by an indirect path involving reflection from the ground. A diagram showing this will be placed on ANARTS Web site www.anarts.com this Sunday In this case the two waves tend to cancel each other at the receiver, providing the distance between the antennae is much greater than the antenna heights. In this condition the Earth reflection is almost at grazing incidence, and because of the phase reversal which takes place whenever radio waves are reflected, irrespective of frequency. the direct and indirect waves arrive at the receiving point approximately 180 degrees out of phase, with the consequent tendency to cancel each other out. However this cancellation is not complete since the indirect path is always slightly longer than the direct path. We continue next week with VHF propagation and the effect of the Earth's curvature. de Col VK2CTD cq cq de vk2tty vk2tty IPS Weekly Solar and Geophysical Report 28th Jul/3rd Aug SUMMARY Date 28 29 30 31 01 02 03 10cm flux 73 73 74 72 73 72 71 AFr index 26 3 3 11 9 7 5 est Aaus index 14 2 3 11 12 6 4 est T index 32 22 10 17 18 18 20 Solar flare activity was very low all week.
