A.N.A.R.T.S. News Bulletin 1489 for 6th April 2008

Each year on the anniversary of its founding, April 18, the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) marks World Amateur Radio Day. On this 83rd anniversary of its inaugural meeting in Paris, the IARU dedicates World Amateur Radio Day to the future of Amateur Radio with its theme, "Amateur Radio: A Foundation for Technical Knowledge."

It is no secret that many professionals in the field of radio, TV, communications and electronics have started their technical education as young radio amateurs. Although Amateur Radio has a different face nowadays -- Digital Communications, Voice over Internet Protocol, Satellite up- and downlinks and more -- it is even of greater value as a foundation for technical knowledge for youngsters. And much more -- it is and should be used as a unique attraction for future young radio amateurs.

World Amateur Radio Day provides an occasion to promote and publicize Amateur Radio. Amateur Radio clubs are encouraged to find suitable ways of celebrating World Amateur Radio Day. Many ways can be considered -- inviting youngsters to visit radio clubs, showing up on the air with a special call sign, organizing a station in a public area with media coverage or publicly honoring amateurs who have made significant contributions. Whatever method is chosen, clubs should think about publishing a press release for the media, giving the background to World Amateur Radio Day and promoting the value of Amateur Radio as a foundation for a technical career.

The Ohio/Penn DX Bulletin No. 852 - excerpts

CQ NEWS
Richard Moseson, W2VU, Editor for CQ Amateur Radio, sent out the following press
release on March 24th: "
Online CQ Magazine Archive Complete;
Issues from 1945-2006 Posted on HamCall.net
CQ Communications, Inc. of Hicksville, New York, publisher of CQ Amateur
Radio magazine, and Buckmaster Publishing of Mineral, Virginia, jointly
announce that Buckmaster's searchable online archive of CQ magazine back
issues, dating back to the magazine's first issue in January 1945, is now
complete. The searchable archive may be accessed via the internet at
http://hamcall.net/cq
or via a one-click link from the CQ website at
http://www.cq-amateur-radio.com
All issues through early 2006 are now online, according to Buckmaster
President Jack Speer, N1BIC. By agreement with CQ, issues are not posted until
two years after their publication dates, as paper copies are still available
from the CQ bookstore. Newer issues will be posted as the two- year 'window'
expires.
Buckmaster, which produces the 'HamCall' CD and website, and has for decades
filmed back issues of CQ onto microfiche for use by researchers and hobbyists
alike, has applied its advanced scanning and searching technology for online
posting of documents to back issues of CQ. It has taken nearly four years to
get all back issues scanned and posted. Pages are available to users as either
low-resolution or high-resolution JPEG image files, or as PDF files, which are
more 'printer-friendly' than the JPEGs.
'One of the great benefits to this approach is Buckmaster's very powerful
search engine,' which indexes every word on every page, notes CQ Publisher
Dick Ross, K2MGA. 'It is far better than anything we could put onto a CD.'
Ross also noted that most readers looking for back issues are seeking a
specific article and don't necessarily want to spend the money for a set of
CDs, 'an amount which can really add up if you want access to nearly 65 years
worth of magazines.'
On the HamCall archive site, pricing is based on the length of time for which
the user wants access. Searches are free, as is access to the first ten pages
of each issue, assuring that the table of contents page will always be
accessible. Archive subscription pricing is as follows:
* Searching and access to the first ten pages of each issue: Free
* 1-day "test drive": 5 USDs (same as the cost for ordering a reprint of a
single article from CQ)
* 3 months: 20 USDs
* 6 months: 30 USDs
* 12 months: 50 USDs
Views are limited to 300 pages per day to conserve bandwidth on the busy
'HamCall' server.
CQ Communications, Inc. publishes CQ Amateur Radio, CQ RadioAmateur (Spanish
CQ), CQ VHF and Popular Communications magazines, plus the CQ Library of
books, videos and CDs. It is headquartered in Hicksville, New York.
Buckmaster Publishing is a leading archiving and retrieval service based in
Mineral, Virginia. In the amateur radio world, it is best-known for archiving
all major ham magazines onto microfiche, and as the publisher of the 'HamCall'
amateur radio international callsign lookup CD and web site."

TO6, GUADELOUPE (NA-102)
Operators Micheal/F6GWV and Gildas/F6HMQ will be active as TO6T between March
28th and April 8th. QSL via F6HMQ.

V7, MARSHALL ISLANDS
Operators Rick/AI5P (V73PX), Randy/N5LE (V73RY) and Neil/WD8CRT (V73NS) are
currently the most active hams on Kwajalein. However, Rick/V73PX is scheduled to
leave April 5th, Randy/V73RY on May 5th and Neil/V73NS in 2009. Look for Rick on
80/40/20/15/10 meters CW/SSB. Randy can be found mostly on 40/20 meters SSB
/RTTY. Neil is usually on CW mostly on 40/20 meters. According to Paul, A35RK,
who talked to Randy recently and reported that "there are a number of licensed
operators there, but not many are very interested in using the club station. In
fact, Randy says that the club station (V73AS) may have to shut down due to the
increase in the electric utility bill which is now over 200 USDs/month.
Negotiations with military command to reduce the bill, are in progress."

W6BA EXHIBITION
Cindy Bernard, granddaughter of William "Bill" Adams, W6BA, is working on an
exhibition/archive of QSL cards of her late grandfather. Bill was a dedicated
DXer and held many early awards in the field, operating as 6ANN '24, U6ANN '25,
NU6ANN '26, W6ANN '27-77? and W6BA 77?-99. Although some cards were lost when he
became a "Silent Key" (SK) in 1999, Cindy has about 4000 international and 2000
U.S. cards dating from 1923-1997. Although she has many cards that he received,
Cindy would like to also include QSLs that he sent. She is looking for QSL cards
(the originals, copies or scans) sent by him to other hams. If you can help her
out, please contact her at: cbernard@soundcommons.org Or via snail mail at:
Cindy Bernard, P.O. Box 411453, Los Angeles, CA 90041 USA.

ZS8, MARION ISLANDS
Rhynhardt, ZS6DXB, ZS8T Press Officer, announced on March 26th, that Petrus,
ZS6GCM, is onboard the SA Agulhas (South Africa's polar research vessel). The
vessel will be going straight to Marion Island. Depending on weather, Petrus
could be on Marion in as short as five days. However, should the weather
deteriorate, there is a fair chance landing on ZS8 could be delayed. If you like
to follow the progress of the ship, go to:
http://www.sailwx.info/shiptrack/shipposition.phtml?call=ZSAFSA
Agulhas Moments before Petrus boarded the Agulhas, he managed to send some
images from Table Bay. Prior to these pictures all radio equipment had been
safely loaded with only a few items still to go onboard. These images can be
viewed on the official ZS8T Web site address at:
http://zs8t.net
Rhynhardt would like to remind everyone that once Petrus is on ZS8, it will take
approx. three to four weeks before any radio equipment is used. This is due to a
changeover time in working patterns and general settling in on the island.
