Solar flare activity was very low all week.

Geomagnetic activity observed for the Australian Region was very low 2nd to 6th; and quiet on 7th and 8th.

Southern Australian Ionospheric F2 critical frequencies were near predicted on 2nd, 4th and 5th; near predicted to 20 per cent enhanced on 3rd, 7th and 8th; and near predicted to 30 per cent enhanced on 6th.

Forecast for 9th to 15th May

Solar activity should be low.

Geomagnetic activity should see quiet to unsettled conditions.

Frequencies should be near predicted monthly values.

The Ohio/Penn DX Bulletin No. 857 - excerpts

3D, FIJI (Update)
Last week we reported that Eddie/VK4AN and his son Raj/VK4FRAJ (age 13) would be
active as 3D2A from Malolo Lailai Island (in the Mamanuca Group, IOTA OC-121)
between May 17-31st. Well, this week we learned that the father and son team
will also be active in the CQWW WPX CW Contest (May 24-25th) as a Multi-2 entry.

5Z, KENYA (Also IOTA Op)
Steffen, 5Z4DX, will be active from Shanzu Beach between May 14th and June 11th.
Activity will be on all bands and modes. He also plans to possibly activate
Wasini Island (AF-067 - May 25-26th) and Lamu Island (AF-040). QSL direct to his
Iceland address at: Frank Steffen Gast, Eskifirdi, 735 Eskifjoedur, ICELAND.
8J50, JAPAN (Special Event)
The Japan Amateur Radio League, Inc. (JARL) will be holding their 50th "Yosakoi
Kochi" meeting on May 25th. Look for special event station 8J50JARL to be active
now through May 25th to celebrate this annual meeting in Kochi, Japan. Activity
will be on all bands 160m through 1200 MHz, CW, SSB, FM and AM. QSL via the JARL
QSL Bureau.

ASIAN TRIP
Look for Nicola, I0SNY, to possibly be active as JT1SNY from Bayankhongor,
Mongolia, starting May 7th. He may also be active as BY1PK/I0SNY from Beijing,
China, May 19-28th. QSL via his home callsign.

CT, PORTUGAL (Lighthouse Activity)
Members of the Algarve DX Group (ADXG) will activate 7 lighthouses
simultaneously between May 31st and June 1st. Activity will be on 40/30/20/17
meters, and possibly 80/15m and 6m (from Santa Maria LH). Modes will be: CW, SSB
and RTTY. A FREE award will be issued to any who contacts all 7 special LH

DXCC NEWS
Bill Moore, NC1L, ARRL DXCC Manager, reports that the following operation is
approved for DXCC credit:
YA/LY1Y - Afghanistan; Operations in 2006 and 2007 If you had cards rejected
for this operation, send an E-mail to dxcc@arrl.org to be placed on the list for
an update.

FJ, ST. BARTHELEMY
Operators Arliss/W7XU and Ed/W0SD are planning a 6 meter DXpedition to St.
Barthelemy that will take place between June 28th and July 6th. Ed informs OPDX
that a TO5 callsign has been applied for. He also requests, "Please do not give
us your grid square. We are not interested in your grid square and it just
wastes time. Our grid square will be FK87nv for those wanting to confirm this as
a new grid square. There may be some night time HF RTTY and CW operations on 30
and 40 meters when six meters sporadic E is over for the day." QSL via W7XU. An

IOTA NEWS
AS-043. Operators Mitsuo/JA1UNS, Suehiro/JI1PLF, Minowa/7N1GMK, 7L4PVR and
7N4VPS will be active as homecall/1 from Hachijo Island (JIIA AS-043-003), in
the JA1 South Izu Group, from May 16-19th. Activity will be on 160-6 meters, CW,
SSB and RTTY. QSL via their home callsign, direct or by the Bureau.

EU-008. Paul, M3KBU, will be active as MM3KBU/p from the Isle of Skye (IOSA
NH-07, SCOTIA CN-14), July 26-27th, during the RSGB IOTA Contest. QSL via M3KBU,
direct is preferred, but Bureau is "OK".

EU-074. Operators Benoit/F8PDR, Jean-Jacques/F5NKX, Denis/F5RJM, Rolf/F9ZG,
Alain/F5HVI, Rene/F6CMC and Alain/F6ACH will be active as F5KAQ/p from Brehat
Island (DIFM MA-012, WLOTA LH-2010), September 1-8th. Activity will be on all
bands and modes. QSL via F5RJM, direct or by the Bureau.

EU-189. (UPDATE) Mike, K9AJ, is a member of the team travelling to Rockall in
two weeks. If weather and seas allow, he will be active using battery power on
20/40 meters CW on the IOTA frequencies for 24 hours. The time window is
approximately May 14-15th but landing date/time is at the sole discretion of the
captain and could be one or two days.

NA-044. Juergen, NF6J, will be active as VO2/NF6J from Battle Island (CISA
NF-049, Newfoundland and Labrador), June 25-30th. Activity will be on or near
the usual IOTA frequencies. QSL via DL7RV (QRZ.com).

NA-102. Members of the Radio Club ACRA Guadeloupe (FG5KC) will activate the
Island of Petit-Terre (Small Island Earth) for a day as FG5KC/p on June 8th.
Activity will be on the HF bands, CW, SSB and VHF bands. Operators mentioned (at
the moment) are: FG5BC, FG5DN, FG1JD, F8BIH, FG1AR, SWL-05 (Issac) and SWL-16
(Jacques). Suggested frequencies are: Listen to the IOTA frequencies. This
expedition is granted by the NFB because it is a natural reserve. Visit their

JAPAN HAS NEW BAND PRIVILEGES
The JARL announced on their Web page that as of April 28th, Japanese radio
amateur operators will receive more band privileges on the 80/75 meters band. JA
operators are now allowed to operate on the following frequencies (*new):
3500-3575 kHz (CW only), 3520-3525 kHz (Digital Mode and CW), 3525-3575 kHz
(Phone and CW), 3599-3612 kHz (* CW and Phone), 3680-3687 kHz (* CW and Phone),
3702-3716 kHz (* CW and Phone), 3745-3770 kHz (CW and Phone) (* 3745-3747 kHz
and 3754-3770 kHz) and 3791-3805 kHz (CW and Phone). Japanese band plans are

JW, SVALBARD
Mika, OH2FFP (OJ1ABOA), is expected to be operating from the Kinnvika base on
Nordaustlandet Island (EU-063) in July for 20 days. Read about the scientific

Also, Mika could be active from the research vessel "RV Horizont-2" which
supplies the Kinnvika base from Longyearbyen.

KH2, GUAM
Operators Lee/HL1IWD and Harry/WX8C will be active as KH2/K1IWD and KH2/WX8C,
respectively, between May 23-26th. The operation will also include participation
in the CQWW WPX CW Contest (May 24-25th) as a Multi- Single/All-Band entry as

LZ08, BULGARIA
Look for special event station LZ08KM (LZ Zero Eight KM) to be active until May
31st. Activity is to commemorate St. Cyril (Kiril) and Methodius, the creators
of the cyrillic alphabet, as well as the "Day of Cyrillic Alphabet and Bulgarian
Culture" - May 24th, which is one of the most important holidays in Bulgaria. As
team operators they will try to activate as many bands and modes as possible.

OA, PERU
Daniel/DL5YWM is now in Lima until May 12th and will be joined by Rene/DL2JRM
and Jens/DL3ALF. During their spare time look for them to be active on 160-10
meters on CW/SSB as OA4/homecall. QSL via their home callsigns (QRZ.com).
ADDED NOTE: This past weekend (possibly Monday this week), the trio of operators
was joined by Jorge/OA4BHY and was active as OA4BHY/3 from Isla Blanca (SA-074).
QSL OA4BHY/3 only via DL2JRM.

RSGB QSL BUREAU (New address). It was announced that the Radio Society of Great
Britain's (RSGB) has contracted out their QSL Bureau. Richard, G3UGF, is the new
QSL Bureau Manager for the RSGB, and he has announced the address and telephone
number of the new central QSL operation. The address is: RSGB QSL Bureau, P.O.
Box 5, Halifax, HX1 9JR, England. The telephone number is: 01422 359362. All
outgoing cards should now be sent to this address. World-wide Managers may also
wish to note this new address, as cards sent to the RSGB HQ address may be
delayed.

VP9, BERMUDA
Ralph/K9ZO and his XYL will be on holiday from here during July, and he expects
to be active as K9ZO/VP9. During his stay he plans to be in the IARU Contest (a
bit) and also monitor 30/17/12/6 meters.

VR2008, HONG KONG (Special Event)
Members of the Hong Kong Amateur Radio DX Association (HARDXA) are pleased to
announce that they have received official permission from the "Office Of The
Telecommunications Authority" authorizing them to use the special event callsign
VR2008O for the period between July 15th and August 31st, to celebrate the 2008
Beijing Olympics. Operations will be primarily HF from 40-10 meters and VHF on 6
meters. The modes used shall be primarily SSB, RTTY and PSK31. QSL direct only
to VR2XMT: Charlie Ho, PO Box 900, Fanling Post Office, Hong Kong. There will be

XW, CAMBODIA
Bruce, XW1B, will be active in the CQWW WPX CW Contest (May 24-25th) as a

ZF, CAYMAN ISLANDS (NA-016)
John, K6AM, will be active as ZF2AM during the CQWW WPX CW Contest (May 24-25th)
as a Single-Op/All-Band entry. QSL via K6AM, direct or by the Bureau or LoTW.

ZF, CAYMAN ISLANDS (NA-016)
Jim, W6NRJ, will be operating from Grand Cayman as ZF2LJ from May 17-22nd. This
will be a holiday operation only (from the beach). Activity will emphasize the
WARC bands as propagation permits. QSLs via W6NRJ, by the Bureau or direct to
W6NRJ per (QRZ.com). ADDED NOTE: Dennis, N6KD, will also be joining Jim.
Callsign and length of stay was not provided.

ZS8, MARION ISLANDS
Rhynhardt, ZS6DXB, ZS8T Press Officer, announced this past week that Petrus,
ZS6GCM, has been on the island for just a little over a month. The staff
takeover period is completed and the ship "SA Agulhas" is making its journey
back to Cape Town. Rhynhardt also reports the following:
* Petrus has already undergone a full circle walk around the Island with one
of the research scientists and has been out of base camp for the past week.
* The team is currently on cleaning duty since the takeover and is now
cleaning the entire camp - furthermore it is business as usual and all is well.
* Petrus is planning on starting construction of the antennas this week and
will be *QRV as ZS8T by May 9th, 2008.*
* Petrus has also confirmed that the newly installed satellite internet system
on Marion Island is working beyond expectations to date, so correspondence
between Petrus and the ZS8T team is a lot easier than during the Bouvet Island
3Y0E operation.
Rhynhardt states, "We hereby say good luck to all in working ZS8T, and we look
forward to seeing your callsign in the ZS8T logbook." For updates and the first

JAPAN, JA. Special event station 8J50JARL is active until May 25 in
commemoration of the 50th General Assembly of the JARL taking place
in Kochi. Activity is on all bands using CW, SSB, AM and FM. QSL

MINIMA TORISHIMA, JD1. Masa, JA6GXK is QRV as JD1BMM on Marcus
Island until May 22. Activity is on 80 to 6 meters. QSL via

MONGOLIA, JT. Nicola, I0SNY is QRV as JT1SNY from Bayankhongor,
possibly until May 18. QSL to home call.

GUAM ISLAND, KH2. Operators JA7LU and JH1AWN are QRV as

OL1908D until May 31 in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the
